PExA – Non-Invasive Distal Airway Liquid Biopsy

Thank you for visiting PExA at the Respiratory Innovation Summit and ATS 2025.
PExA is a Swedish life science company pioneering a unique, non-invasive technology for sampling respiratory tract lining fluid (RTLF) and surfactant directly from the Small airways, precisely where many lung diseases originate and develop. The sample resembles bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) but is undiluted and, unlike other breath-based methods such as EBC or VOC, PEx originates exclusively from the distal airways. Studies have shown that hundreds of potential biomarkers, including, proteins, lipids and miRNAs, can be detected and analyzed in this novel matrix.
We are advancing diagnostic solutions for a broad spectrum of lung diseases, including COPD, asthma, PE and ARDS, as well as in occupational health. In addition, PExA offers a specialized version of the instrument that can be integrated in-line with mechanical ventilators, enabling use in ICU settings. Currently we focus on preliminary findings suggesting that PEx samples offer unprecedented discriminatory power in detection of lung cancer. Another study demonstrates that PEx samples can be used for PK measurements, unlocking novel opportunities for drug development. Aligned with our mission to support respiratory researchers and enable precise and early, AI-driven diagnostics, we proudly introduce the Small Airway Atlas™, the first database indexing biomolecules from the deepest of our lungs. A first version is expected to be launched in 2025.
